TPSX Materials Properties Database from NASA

The goal of TPSX is to provide easy and immediate access to material data for analysts, engineers and designers in the aerospace field. This version of TPSX offers data on over 1500 materials, compiled by various NASA Centers and industry sources. Most of the materials are designed for aerospace applications. This was reported in the February 2006 issue of Infowatch, a monthly electronic newsletter, published by the National Centre for Science Information (NCSI) Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

The Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) is the preeminent engineering information technology organization in the Department of Defense (DoD). ITL supports the research missions of U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), other Corps activities, the Army, DoD, and other agencies by conceiving, planning, managing, conducting, and coordinating research and development (R&D) in high performance computing, computer-aided and interdisciplinary engineering, computer science, information technology, and instrumentation systems. Recently, Publications of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center are published online.

Nature is now available from 1970 to date and issues back to 1950 will be online in six months. All issues of The Lancet back to 1823.
Titles published by John Wiley in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, and Biophysics, Cell and developmental biology and Neurosciences. Elsevier titles in Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology, Medicine and Dentistry, Neurosciences, and Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics and Toxicology. Refworks has RSS feeds

According to January 2006 Release Notes, RefWorks has incorporated a RSS feed reader to allow you to establish links to your favorite RSS feeds and import data from those feeds directly into RefWorks. You can access the RSS Feeds page from the Search area of RefWorks. With RefWorks users can create their own personal database by importing references from online databases. They can use these references in writing their papers and automatically format the paper and the bibliography in seconds. As a web-based product, RefWorks is available to users across various platforms including Windows, Mac, Unix, etc. There is an online tutorial available at Refworks Tutorial.

To set up an RSS feed:
(1) Run your search in PubMed.
(2) Select RSS Feed from the Send to menu.
(3) Click Create Feed and copy the XML icon into your RSS Reader.

An RSS reader is required to use this service on your computer and retrieve new items from PubMed. RSS feeds can also be retrieved in your bloglines account by subscribing to the feed.

Digital Dissertations

With more than 1.5 million entries, UMI's Dissertation Abstracts database is the one central, authoritative source for information about doctoral dissertations and master's theses. The database includes citations for materials ranging from the first U.S. dissertation, accepted in 1861, to those accepted as recently as last semester; those published from 1980 forward also include 350-word abstracts, written by the author. Citations for master's theses from 1988 forward include 150-word abstracts. Of the 1.5 million titles listed, UMI offers over a million in full text. For these titles, the database citation includes UMI's order number. Titles published since 1997 are available in in PDF format and have 24 page previews available.

Drexel dissertations are available in full text from 1997.

The libraries have now implemented "one-stop shopping" for journal titles in the Library Catalog. Records for electronic journals have been added to the catalog, allowing use of the full range of catalog search options for both print and online journals.

"Journal Search" links throughout the library web site will now point to a search page that offers searching of our complete journal collection by title, keyword or ISSN (International Standard Serial Number. For browsing convenience, links are also provided to the alphabetical lists of electronic journals.

Search results will include both print and electronic versions of a journal title, depending on what is included in our collection. Electronic Journal listings (labelled with "[Electronic Resource]") will link to an SFX menu, listing the available electronic sources.

Jay Bhatt, information services librarian for engineering, led a discussion Wednesday on "Google Scholar and Other Information Resource Tools", examining a variety of information needs for a wide spectrum of audiences ranging from faculty to graduate and undergraduate students. The discussion also covered the new Google Scholar and alternative resources such as online handbooks, encyclopedias, comprehensive citation analysis and online bibliographies. The seminar was part of the College of Arts and Sciences E-Learning Seminar Series.

INSPEC covers journal articles and papers presented at conferences, although significant books, technical reports, and dissertations are also included. Sources include more than 3,500 journals and more than 1,500 conference proceedings, books, and reports corresponding to the following publications: Physics Abstracts, Electrical & Electronics Abstracts, and Computer & Control Abstracts, as well as to the online INSPEC database. Approximately 330,000 new records are added to the database annually.

INSPEC is available from Engineering Village2 where both Ei Compendex and INSPEC can be searched at the same time.

The IEEE student branch would like to invite you to attend a lecture by David Hammer. The Lecture, entitled Codes, Ciphers, and the German Enigma Machine, will be held on Tuesday April 19th at 5:00 PM in the Stern Seminar room in the Hagerty Library. The journal impact factor is a measure of the frequency with which the average article in a journal has been cited in a particular year. The impact factor helps you evaluate a journal’s relative importance, especially when you compare it to others in the same field.

The impact factor is calculated by dividing the number of citations in the current year to articles published in the two previous years by the total number of articles published in the two previous years.

Engineering Village 2 RSS feed

In an earlier post on RSS Feeds including HubMed (pubmed rewired) some useful RSS sites were provided. You will need to download a feedreader to be able to read updates provided by various RSS sites. There are number of RSS readers available from which you can select a reader.

RSS Compendium is a list with links to a variety of RSS readers categorised by different platforms http://allrss.com/rssreaders.html

Engineering Village 2 provides RSS feeds of your search queries. Once you have executed a search, you can post the latest updated records that match your query to your RSS aggregator and share the results with others within your institution.

Engineering Village 2 RSS feed includes titles of the records and links back to Engineering Village 2 for the detailed record. You need to be in an IP authenticated environment that has access to Engineering Village 2 to view the detailed record. This feature will allow you to get automatic weekly updates of your search queries' results within your RSS readers. To use the RSS feeds from Engineering Village 2, execute and refine your search until you have the search strategy that you wish to use as your feed. If your organization has enabled the RSS feed, an RSS feed link with will appear following your search statement.

Click on the RSS link. Copy and paste the link to your RSS reader. Each week when the database is updated any new results matching your query will be displayed in your RSS reader. Up to 400 titles will be delivered with each update.

CSA Illumina Interface

The final transition to the new CSA Illumina platform from the CSA Internet Database Service (IDS) will occur on Thursday, 10 February. At that time, everyone logging in to search databases delivered through CSA will automatically access the new CSA Illumina platform and interface.

In the meantime, we have introduced a revised home page (http://www.csa.com) and an updated Administrative Profile Module.

Login links and links to full-text, holdings, and ILL should interface with CSA Illumina the way that they currently interface with IDS. If you have any problems, please do not hesitate to contact our technical support department at support@csa.com.

The CSA Illumina platform was designed specifically integrating feedback from users. We look forward to your reactions to CSA Illumina and hope you will share them with us at feedback@csa.com.
